Photographing since 1974, Cathy has performed her own darkroom responsibilities, including printing, developing, artistic editing and composition. Working exclusively in the medium of black and white, her efforts have achieved technical elegance demonstrating a true quality un-touched by the onset of the digital age. From 2001 on, Cathy has illustrated her mastery in Sepia thereby enhancing the historical quality of the finished product. Each ultimate piece is a true work of art, sometimes taking 30 hours to complete.
These prints are unique, hand-prepared and timeless. Her photographs of forgotten scenes and now historical memories depict life on the Earth's most spectacular, aesthetic and sacred terrain. All photographs produced in her inventory are hand-processed in a darkroom, hand-spotted and sepia-toned by individual effort. Her images are produced in the traditional concept and not digitally captured or enhanced. Completed photos are burned, dodged and printed on fiber based paper, (now approaching extinction), that demonstrates, (since 1977), years of devotion to her craft. Any Cathy Shine photograph will be an appreciated piece of art and an addition to one's legacy collection.

8If one is limited to a 24 hour sojourn to the island of Hawai'i, Waipi'o is the only spot to visit. 50 generations of Hawa'ians have lived and died here, and was the hiding place for an infant King Kamehameha, avoiding a death sentence from the reigning king. We came upon a wild horse who had recently given birth. After several attempts to balance itself, this young offspring, succeeded in her efforts and began feeding from her mother. No. 008
1212Nelson Rockefeller selected this sight to build his most favorite retreat, The Mauna Kea Hotel. Mauna Kea means "white mountain" because snow falls on the summit during the winter. On this day, the sun was setting and I was interested in the shape of the footsteps. The photo was taken on the south end of the sand. The look of that beach has changed over the years. Homes are built everywhere. No. 012
13Hilo, a quaint, exotic town reminds me of the South Pacific. Inlets of sea water merging with fresh water, tiny islands, little brackish ponds, green vegetation, mystical clouds and reflections everywhere. Keaukaha is the district in which this reflection occurred. I remember the light and the sound of the waves when I recorded this scene. No. 013
10Before Hurricanes' 'lwa and Iniki, Po'ipu was a dream to most travelers. This couple just emerged from the San Francisco flight and darted to the shore. This area, now, is over-populated, over-developed and devoid of its previous charm. Hawai'i has set aside this beach as a habitat for the Hawaiian Monk seals who call Po'ipu their home. No. 010
27On the morning that 'lwa assaulted Kaua'i, Hinakuluiau, the Hawaiian goddess of rain, refused to sleep. We exited the Island and returned home on the 10am flight. Upon arrival, we discovered that Kaua'i experienced a devastating hurricane. Two months later, we visited the scene to photograph many images. This area housed a small building before the storm. 15A walk down Waikiki Beach affords many opportunities for photography. One never knows what subjects will appear. This image illustrates what, for tourists, is Hawai'i. Diamond Head, Waikiki, High-rise hotels, an outrigger canoe and satisfied visitors assisting the guides with the beaching of the boat. No. 015
17In 1987, this elegant beach, under direction from the goddess, Pele, was covered by lava. This is a perfect image of black & white. The dark of the sand meets the ivory of the water. Black sand is created when molten lava meets the cool ocean and splinters into pebbles. This image of a once existing paradise is all that is left. No. 017
20In the foreground, one can see a man-made fish pond constructed on the Kohala Coast of the Hawai'i. It was constructed hundreds of years ago for the Ali'i, (Hawaiian Royalty). These lagoons allowed small fish to enter from the sea, swim within the pool's confines, never to find an exit. Harvesting this water garden by any person other than Ali'i was punishable by death. 21Honu is the Hawaiian name for turtle. This beautiful beach is one of the many shoreline jewels that give the Kohala coast its reputation as a beach-goer's paradise. This little animal owns the sand. No. 021
22Where the cool sea on Hawai'i's South east shore meets the underground fresh water stream heated by the volcano, Nature creates an unusual brackish pool that the locals call Warm Pond. The water's temperature is comfortably warm. No. 022
25The Ocean-side path between Hapuna Beach and Kauna'oa Bay serpentines on the shore past beautiful homes, lush flora and views of Maui in the distance. The path connects the Mauna Kea Hotel with the Hapuna Prince Hotel. Sunsets appear here year-round. No. 025
26The white Hybiscus, is indigenous to Hilo and the Islands of Hawai'i. The color reminds one of the traditional wedding gowns. Pure, innocent, gentile simplicity. Hilo is located in a tropical rainforest in the south east portion of the Island The scent of flora is everywhere. Notice how the delicate, fragile petals are captured in this piece. No. 026

28The fern is indigenous to Hawai'i, used in Ho'i'o salad and grows at sea level and up to 10000 feet. The versatile plant was once used by Hawaiians to embalm their deceased for the after life. This plant grows up to 25 feet and the uncoiled juvenile stems are boiled and consumed at Hawaiian dinner tables. No. 028
30Hawaiian people consider this area sacred to their very important traditions. Here the indigenous people are invited to harvest ferns for various events. I was with a Hawaiian daughter and granddaughter, Kaiao, who selected these ferns for the funeral of their father-grandfather. The air was warm, misty and mysterious. Kalopa is the sight that provides organic materials for decorative wear. No. 030
32What seems to be an infinite Papaya forest, the early-morning light piqued my interest. The amazing muted reflective quality gives rise to an interesting composition. Papaya was introduced to Hawai'i and not indigenous. If one views this photograph in an inverted stage, it gives the illusion of a reflection on a pond. No. 032
33Traveling all over the South Pacific allows one to view extremely unusual tropical flora. Hawai'i is an adoptive home to multitudes of unusual Heliconia. Up to 200 species of this plant exist around the world. There exists no Hawaiian name since the plant is not a part of ancient Hawai'i. The English name is "Lobster Claw". No. 033
35Captan Fletcher Christian's most favorite culinary staple. Harvesting this fruit, peeling off the skin, will show a white, fleshy consistancy that not only looks, but tastes like bread. The fruit is heated or fried and served with butter. A wonderful creation in the plant world. My husband and I first sampled this delicious fruit on Huahine, the Society Islands, in 1992. No. 035
36The Banyon tree is seen all over Hawai'i. I don't believe it is endemic to the Islands. These trees are characterized by their aerial prop roots which grow into thick woody fingers. Old trees can spread out laterally using these prop roots to cover a wide area. My interest was piqued in the shape of the roots. This old friend lives well near the Honolulu Zoo in the shadows of Diamond Head. No. 036
38At our home in Hawai'i, we live in a world of flowers, trees and bushes and birds. These little flowers are produced by a small tree called a Rose Flowered Jatropha, a native of the West Indies. It is a perennial and grows to twenty feet.. A simple photo of a simple pleasure. No. 038
39The Silversword ('Ahinahina) is endemic to Hawai'i and located only on Mauna Kea and Haleakala on Maui. This endangered species grows on dry volcanic soil at the 12000 foot level, lives for up to 40 years, elegantly flowers, then dies. It posseses no protective mechanism against grazing mammals. The touch by animals and humans will terminate the plant's life. The silver strands produced by this flower shines in the moonlight. No. 039
40Exiting Waimea to the North, one passes Mud Lane on Highway 19. The play on light through the trees illustrated this quiet, serene setting as what it really is. The detailed trees whisper in the wind. The road perimeters pastures whose silence is broken by the sound of docile cows. No. 040
41The botanical garden has many, many unusual samples of flora that only appear in the tropics. This form of a ginger plant caught my eye. The shape, size and beauty of this growth is a pleasure to view. No. 041
42Coconut trees are often the product of a rogue coconut that has traveled thousands of miles to an anchorage on a distant island. This tree provides grows from a patch of shoreline coral. This park is clean, serene, and not often visited. The tree reminds me of strength. No. 042
43We visited Kaua'i, consecutively with our children, for 13 years. The oldest inhabited island in the Hawaiian chain is also the loveliest. This lonely tree was warmed by the eastern sun and the light was spectacular. In the distance, one can see, (faintly), a boat on the right side horizon. No. 043
44Hilo is most Hawaiian of all the isles and the birthplace of Kamehameha, the future king and the man who united the islands. This photo illustrates just what Hilo is about. The textures, reflections and shapes is old Hawai'i. ln the foreground, one can see a banana tree and its partial reflection on the Wailua River. No. 044
45We were visiting Kaua'i and surprised my parents who were ensconced at Po'ipu Beach. They traveled with us to the Taro fields in Hanalei, and at the twilight before the day's end, with my father close to my side, I captured this elegant photograph that embraces all that is photography. The light, the scene, the mood. That day, with my dad, is an indelible etching in the back of my mind. No.045
46We first arrived in Kailua-Kona after Hurricanes 'Iva and lniki devastated Kaua'i. Too many storms inspired us to focus our visits to a more gentile island. Near the Hulihe'e Palace, in the down town village of Kona, lie a family of three coconut trees on the shore of the Kailua Bay. The setting sun offered a background of beautiful light. The small boat, on the horizon, is framed by two of the family's members. No. 046
47I'm not sure why l captured this image.. l liked the light, the figure and the boat framed by the trees. The area north of Waikiki, away from the tourists, is remarkable. Late summer, late August, is the time to visit Honolulu. Only 500 yards from the tourist mecca is light years away from the confusion. 'Oahu is elegant when one commutes away from Kalakaua Avenue. No. 047
50A stunning example of Flora, this plumeria tree displays beauty, not only with the flower, but also the leaves. Keokaha is a lush area in Hilo, and located in a rainforest, providing the plants daily water. Look at the detail of this photo. One sees this tree and experiences its fragrance all over Hawai'i. 53Visiting Lana'i in the mid-80's was an adventure. Pineapple was the machine that drove the the Island's economy. Currently, tourism has replaced the pineapple fields. The light on the cloud made this photo. Simple beauty. It reminds one of an erupting volcano. No. 053
177The original "Queen's Bath" was located in Kalapana. It was formed after a lava tube collapsed and filled with fresh water supplied by natural springs. In ancient times only the Ali'i (Hawaiian Royalty) were permitted entry into the sacred waters. In the 1983 to1987 Kilauea eruption, the original site was destroyed by a lava flow. Our chance encounter, before the flare-up, allowed us to document this pond. Today, few of these photos exist. No. 177
58The hike from The Volcano House to the Kilauea caldera is a 7 mile round trip. On the Halema'uma'u trail is a large boulder, possibly 15 feet in height. A remnant of Pele's anger, this "rock" was catapulted 1000 years ago from its volcanic source to this location. The strength of this monolith and the muted light inspired me to capture this scene. 62Mauna Kea, from sea floor to peak, is the tallest mountain on Earth. Looking South one can see the tip of her sister, Mauna Loa. Above the clouds, our family played in the snow, threw snow-balls and experienced the thin air of the mid-atmosphere. One and a half hour later, we swam in the Pacific Ocean. No. 062
64Mauna Kea's sister mountain rises north of her. Mauna Loa, the most massive mountain on earth, consists of 10,000 cubic miles of rock. Still active, it last erupted in 1984. Mauna Loa nevertheless adds land mass to the youngest island chain in the world. At 13,796 feet, I felt light-headed when I recorded this image. No. 064

70The Hanalei River is sourced from the surrounding mountains, nourishes the valley and spills the remaining water into the Pacific Ocean. Mount Wai'ale'ale is known to produce up to 600 rainfall inches annually. No. 070

72Many years ago, the Kailua pier was the focal point of Hawaiian conversation. Fishing at this pier seldom occurs anymore. The angler who is about to cast, seemingly, has attached his hook in the distant Mokuaikaua Church, a landmark of this beautiful village. No. 072

73After arriving from Tahiti, we stopped in Kaua'i to meet my parents. On a Sunday, they invited us to brunch at a Plantation house located at an old sugar plantation. We drove back into a wonderfull estate-like setting. These little girls were preparing for a Hula demonstration. Ironically, 23 years later, our Hawaiian granddaughter Kaiao, now dances in the Ho'ika in the Merrie Monarch. No. 073
75We walked through a pineapple farm years before Lana'i became a tourist mecca and met these ladies who made their living picking the tropical fruit. I was enamored by the look in their faces. All smiled, all had a story and all lived in a tranquil setting. Lana'i, once a pineapple capital, has eliminated the fruit to accommodate tourists. A pineapple takes 2 years from seedling to maturity. Too much time for a profit. No. 075
80Christmas in Hawai'i is a celebration that hasn't changed in centuries. I was "back-stage" while some little girls were practicing for a Hula pageant. I love photographing children and this photo will attest to that fact. I photograph constantly and always look for something that interests me. Shortly after snapping this photo, I was asked to vacate the premise. 27 years later I discovered the reason behind my coerced exit. No. 080
81Our son, who lives in Hilo, surprised me with a ticket to the Merrie Monarch, a world known Hula competition that draws people from many countries. I nailed a first-row seat at Edith Kanaka'ole Stadium and point-blanked this photo before a performance. The true Hawaiian Hula is a sacred art of speaking with one's hands. No. 081
83These little girls, waiting to perform at a Christmas pageant, are prescious. Look at their faces. So serious, so young and wondering "who is this lady with a camera?". This photograph was quietly recorded in the space of a few seconds. It's all about the faces. No. 083
167Rainstorms in Hilo are beautiful explosions. Cloudbursts come in buckets and minutes later, the warm Sun re-appears. ln Hawai'i, extremes are commonplace. This little girl was enjoying the downpour. No.167

91Watching children playing in the ocean makes me smile. The little girl and the water reflects the sun as if the photograph were taken with a strobe. A great example of natural light and the beauty it accents. The simplicity of this image, the texture of the sand and the form of the subject are captured. Life is fun. No. 091
16During the day that Honolulu unveiled the Duke Kahanamoku statue, a group of men who , as young boys, were tutored by modern Hawaii's most famous ambassador, posed for the local newspaper. I squeezed in between the photo-journalists to capture the moment. Photography is history. All these men were important to Hawai'i and a link to the "Duke". No. 016
92Our first trip to Moloka'i found us meeting this gentleman. His name was Mr.Yamashita, and he was holding his "Hawai'ian Angler" fishing pole while talking to my husband. This man was the most serene person I have ever met. He mentioned to us that he had never been off the Island. Look at his face. A very happy and peaceful man. Hawai'i does that to people. No. 092

104On June 21st, the setting sun begins its trek to the south. At Kaunaoa Beach, at what is called Manta Rey point, 6 months after the Solstice, the muted orb traverses past the final point that eliminates the northern shadows for 6 months. ln the calm of the early evening surf, our granddaughter, Ashley ends her swim and looks at the sun. This photo is dedicated to her. No. 104
122Mauna Kea is the home of a multitude of planetariums from all over the world. The thin, pure air results in easy access to the heavens. The shape of the structure on a desert mountain, above the clouds, sparks an interest. This was my first visit to the summit. No. 122
150After Hurricane I'wa in 1982, we decided to abandon our annual visits to Kau'ai and focussed on the Island of Hawai'i to enjoy its culture and diversity. Ater exiting the airport, we experienced a culture shock of endless lava fields and little flora. We landed on the moon! The weeds growing from this volcanic rock seemed like an aberration, yet the beauty of this terrain is unparalleled. No. 150
154The Pu'u in the distance, beyond the fence, drew my attention. A Pu'u is the geologic remnant after a volcanic-boiling pot of lava cools and dries.The light is the reason why l snapped this photo. No. 154

7A Flamingo exhibit at the Honolulu Zoo seemed like a fantasy. The light and reflections it produced was distorted by my super-wide-angle lens that gives this scene a Hollywood mystique. Because the angle was so wide, the photo captured 3 times the targeted scene. After I developed this print, I retired that lens and never used it again. No. 007
29The early-morning sun on Kauai's eastern shoreline illuminated this venerable tree at the ocean's edge. I waited thirty minutes for the muted light to perform its magic. Kaua'i is the Northern-most inhabited and the oldest island in the Hawaiian chain of 1600 islands. Eastern Kaua'i is dominated by high cliffs, crashing down to the sea. Mount Waiale'ale, the wettest spot on Earth, is a few miles from this shoreline. No. 029
63This Twin Keawe tree frames the Kohala mountains to the north. Keawe, not endemic to the Islands, was imported from Africa and produces thick, brutal thorns that easily penetrate footwear. I am told that the early religious missionaries decided to plant these trees to force the Hawaiians to wear shoes. Keawe is prominent on the Island of Hawai'i. I like the grasses, the clouds and the Kohala range. No. 063
159Our friend invited us on his boat for an afternoon sunset voyage 5 miles off the Kona shore from Ku'a Bay. The arriving shadow of the early night was accented by the slumbering sun. A small boat is warmed on the horizon. The sun's reflection is the focus of the photograph. No. 159
82On the Island of Hawai'i's southeastern shore lies a super-natural, spiritual, organic pool that mixes the warm ocean water with the thermal-heated fresh water that travels a subterranean serpentine route down from Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain (from sea floor to peak) on earth. Our granddaughter, Kaiao, who has spent many hours in water, warms herself with the gift from the Hawaiian god, Pele. No. 082

The shores at Lumahai invite a small stream, which is sourced from the eastern Sleeping Giant mountain range, to deposit its fresh water into an aggressive sea. Through the mist, one can view the mountain the locals call "Bali Hai" from the movie "South Pacific". That movie was filmed on this beach. No. 173

184With Mauna Kea guarding Hilo Bay, one can see the bridge to Coconut Island. This photo was taken from the roof top of a local hotel. This image shows detail of the mountain, while moments later, clouds covered the summit. Mauna Kea is 13,796 feet above sea level yet shrinks every day from its own weight. No. 184
185On our first trip to Moloka'i, we stopped at Kaunaka'kai Bay and this tree seemed like it walked on water. One can stroll in that bay for hundreds of yards from the shore and still be in 6 inches of water. No. 185
187We were told that this lake, in South-eastern Hawai'i, is 400 feet deep. Green Lake, known by the locals, is a tropical swimming pond of unequaled beauty. The water, here, collects warmth from the volcano. The two people, swimming in the lake, left their clothes on the shore. No.187
188The SS Constitution had a storied history before it was commissioned in the 1980's to inter-Island in Hawai'i. This elegant vessel had no equal. I recorded this image for the sake of history. In the foreground is the Beach Naupaka plant, indigenous to Hawai'i. Aloha Airlines, whose plane flies above the ship, is now bankrupt. In 1997, this ship sank 700 miles off the Hawaiian shore.
