Cathy Shine
Photographing since 1974, Cathy has performed her own darkroom responsibilities, including printing, developing, artistic editing and composition. Working exclusively in the medium of black and white, her efforts have achieved technical elegance demonstrating a true quality un-touched by the onset of the digital age. From 2001 on, Cathy has illustrated her mastery in Sepia thereby enhancing the historical quality of the finished product. Each ultimate piece is a true work of art, sometimes taking 30 hours to complete.
These prints are unique, hand-prepared and timeless. Her photographs of forgotten scenes and now historical memories depict life on the Earth's most spectacular, aesthetic and sacred terrain. All photographs produced in her inventory are hand-processed in a darkroom, hand-spotted and sepia-toned by individual effort. Her images are produced in the traditional concept and not digitally captured or enhanced. Completed photos are burned, dodged and printed on fiber based paper, (now approaching extinction), that demonstrates, (since 1977), years of devotion to her craft. Any Cathy Shine photograph will be an appreciated piece of art and an addition to one's legacy collection.

2Mill Valley, California. 2002.
The elderly horse loved to pose for the camera. Mount Tamalpais provides the backdrop. When photographing, one wishes to capture something un-ordinary. With that in mind, discovering the un-ordinary may occur in the dark room. I hiked up the hill and loved the serenity in his weathered face. He approached me. No. 002
3San Rafael, California. 1977.
At this time, l was taking a photography class at College of Marin. One of my assignments was documenting trucks. As a beginner in this field, l had to learn to avoid the obvious, and uncover unfamiliar images that demonstrate strength. A great example of documentation is this photo. Shapes, designs, light, composition. Documentation tells a story. A nice, beautiful family of four. No. 003
4Mill Valley, California. 1995.
Our Mill Valley home is often frequented by family. Our beautiful grand daughter, Ashley, was investigating rain through the dining room window. With her was Willie, her's (and our) best, best friend. Willie was Ashley's shadow. Our home is located in a forest and park. One of the many trees on our property was planted by Ashley. No. 004
5Collesseo. Rome, Italy. 2000.
This cat seemed to pose for me with the back-drop of one of the most famous, (and infamous), structures in the history of the world. The Roman Coliseum, the scene of human sacrifice for the amusement of the masses, held 60,000 people, glued to their seats viewing the slaughter of men and women. Aquatic battles, combative gladiators and men waging war against lions and tigers. This cat is king. No. 005
6Vierwaldstattersee, Luzern, Switzerland. 2001.
The cleanest city we have ever visited is Luzern, Switzerland. Over many visits, my husband and I agree that if we ever live in Europe, Luzern is our choice. The man and the dog looks like they're related. Two old swiss friends who comfort each other. Both faces in this scene are serene. Real buddies! No. 006
7Honolulu Zoo, 'Oahu, Hawai'i. 1983.
A Flamingo exhibit at the Honolulu Zoo seemed like a fantasy. The light and reflections it produced was distorted by my super-wide-angle lens that gives this scene a Hollywood mystique. Because the angle was so wide, the photo captured 3 times the targeted scene. After I developed this print, I retired that lens and never used it again. No. 007
8Waipi'o Valley, Hawai'i. 1987.
If one is limited to a 24 hour sojourn to the island of Hawai'i, Waipi'o is the only spot to visit. 50 generations of Hawa'ians have lived and died here, and was the hiding place for an infant King Kamehameha, avoiding a death sentence from the reigning king. We came upon a wild horse who had recently given birth. After several attempts to balance itself, this young offspring, succeeded in her efforts and began feeding from her mother. No. 008
9Monterey, California. 2008.
We visit zoos, aquariums and gardens in whatever city we travel. The Monterey Aquarium is a must see for everybody. The light, the shapes and textures are this image's focus. No. 009
98Paris, France. 2006.
On the Ile St Louis, one discovers the Rue St Louis and its shops, restaurants, homes and people. A simple, self-contained community, the rue is a microcosm of French life. The merchant in this photo has woked in this building for over 50 years. This piece documents all that is France. No. 098
